Are human beings naturally selfish or cooperative? Why does modern life place so
much emphasis on individuality, achievement and personal success? And why do so
many people still long for connection, belonging and community?
This discussion led course explores some of the major ideas that have shaped
modern thinking about human nature, society and the self: we will consider questions
about work, identity, technology, wellbeing, consumerism and belonging.
Along the way, we will examine how modern life has increasingly pulled people
between competition and connection, freedom and responsibility, self-interest and
collective wellbeing. We’ll consider what these tensions reveal about who we are and
the kind of society we want to create.

This course combines psychology, sociology, philosophy and social history. It is
designed for curious adult learners. No prior knowledge is required, just an interest in
understanding ourselves and the world around us.
