The class is conducted in German, with some explanations in English, giving the students the opportunity to expand and consolidate their language skills in a range of contexts. Pair and group work activities and items from TV and other audio-visual media are regular parts of the lessons.

This course will enable you to:-

Recognise and use the main features of grammar with confidence.

Listen effectively for specific details/general information, ideas and opinions from a range of sources.

Understand some key points from radio or TV programmes on current affairs or topics of personal interest and comment on them.

Communicate adequately in a range of social and everyday situations. Ask for and provide information on a range of topics. Respond to ideas and opinions, taking part in varied discussions.

Read texts in German to extract specific details and to identify general information, ideas and opinions from different types of source material (e.g. short story, magazine and newspaper articles)

Write effectively in the target language for a range of purposes (e.g. giving information or your opinion on a particular topic ).

Develop cultural awareness and understanding of German speaking societies.

Ulrike Hitchen

I am a native German lecturer with over thirty years’ experience of language teaching. I hold two university degrees and have qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in the UK. I have experience of teaching children and adults and at all levels i.e. from beginners’ to proficiency level.

I am very interested in German language, culture and current affairs and travel to Germany very regularly. My aim is to make my classes enjoyable, informative, topical and communicative.
