This course aims to introduce the student to the materials and tools used in Furniture making, and learn some basic techniques.

It is for: No prior knowledge or experience is needed to enrol on this course.

For the first class you will need:

Pencil, notebook. Some ideas of what you might want to make in future classes

Additional Costs: The materials for Project 1 are included in the course fee . The tutor will advise on other materials, how to source and costs associated with your own project.

Course Programme Each week will have a focus for learning a Furniture making skill. The weekly plan is a guide, and can be changed dependent on skill level.

Project 1 – a small trinket/jewellery box with a geometric designed lid using a variety of timbers.

This project should take us 3-4 weeks to complete, and you will learn how to construct a Dovetail, comb, dowel and lap joint. You will also learn how to design a parquetry panel for your box lid and how to sand and finish your box.

We can then go on to design and make your own project which could be a bedside cabinet, small side table with 4 legs, coffee table, small round topped pedestal table, small bookshelf, a wooden candle stick, or you could design and make a piece of furniture to match apiece in your own house (as long as you can get it home!). This will take up the remaining weeks of the course.

For those who have attended previously, you will be able to continue with your project, or develop something new.

By the end of this course you will have learnt how to plane and glue timber together, construct a drawer and door using dovetail joints, design and turn your own table legs and construct a table using mortice and tenon joints.
