This course is the first term of the first year of French and is designed for complete beginners as
well as those wishing to go back to basics to consolidate their knowledge.
The course includes practice of the four language skills – listening , speaking , reading and writing
but with particular focus on the first three.

The main objective of the course is to develop and practise spoken and written French and to
have fun while doing so!

The topics we will cover include the following:
Meeting and greeting people
Pronunciation
Alphabet and numbers
Days, months and seasons
Introducing oneself
Nationalities
Family
Food and drink
Free time
Places in and around town


Grammatical structures will include:
Present tense ( Regular -er verbs + some common irregular ones )
Genders and plurals of nouns ( definite + indefinite articles )
Adjectives ( position and agreement )
Partitive articles ( du , de la , des etc. )
Prepositions
Negatives ( ne...pas )
Question words and structure


At some point in the course we will also be using a text book but the title is still under review and
yet to be confirmed. We will not be using it for several weeks but will be using the tutor’s own
resources, as well as other materials such as short magazine articles, songs, poems , video clips,
games and online exercises.
There will be plenty of opportunity to practise pronunciation, develop grammatical skills and gain
confidence in spoken French in a relaxed environment. Alors, viens nous rejoindre!

Catherine Jennings

Catherine is a French and German tutor with around 16 years of experience and has taught from beginners to A-Level students. She has taught in a local secondary school, on adult learning programmes and in local businesses.
