This five‑week programme introduces learners to the core skills of digital photography, helping them move beyond automatic settings and start creating intentional, well‑composed images. Each session blends clear instruction with practical exercises, giving participants time to absorb concepts, practise with their own cameras, and develop confidence week by week.
What You’ll Learn
Week 1 — Getting to Know Your Camera
Focus: Camera controls, modes, and essential functions
Topics:
- Overview of camera types (DSLR, mirrorless, compact)
- Buttons, dials, menus, and what they do
- Understanding shooting modes (Auto, P, A/AV, S/TV, M)
- File types: JPEG vs RAW
- Hands‑on: Exploring your camera’s layout and settings
Week 2 — Exposure Basics: The Exposure Triangle
Focus: ISO, shutter speed, aperture
Topics:
- What exposure is and why it matters
- ISO: sensitivity and noise
- Shutter speed: motion blur vs freezing action
- Aperture: depth of field and background blur
- Exposure triangle in practice
- Hands‑on: Controlled exposure exercises
Week 3 — Focusing, Sharpness & White Balance
Focus: Getting crisp, accurate images
Topics:
- Autofocus modes (AF‑S/One Shot, AF‑C/AI Servo)
- Focus points and when to use them
- Techniques for sharper images (stabilisation, shutter choices, holding technique)
- White balance and colour accuracy
- Hands‑on: Focus and sharpness practice with static and moving subjects
Week 4 — Composition & Creative Techniques
Focus: Making photos visually appealing

- Rule of thirds, leading lines, framing, symmetry
- Perspective and angles
- Using natural light creatively
- Simple storytelling through images
- Hands‑on: Guided composition walk or indoor composition challenge
Week 5 — Practical Shooting Session & Review
Focus: Bringing everything together
Topics:
- Real‑world shooting practice (indoors or outdoors depending on venue)
- Applying exposure, focus, and composition skills
- Reviewing images: what worked, what to improve
- Common beginner mistakes and how to avoid them
- Q&A and next steps for continued learning
