The course aims to offer a basic overview of the most significant developments in medical treatment from ancient times until the creation of the NHS
The course will cover a range of topics including:
Ancient medical beliefs and practices
- Causes: God and The Devil, The Four Humours and Miasma Theory
- Religion: the role of the Catholic Church and Islamic scholars in Medieval medicine
- Progress: The Renaissance and Anatomy
- War: Amputation to Plastic Surgery
- Surgery: The power of the theatre
- Germs and Pain: Hygiene, Anaesthetics and Antiseptics
- Observation and Experimentation: Edward Jenner, John Snow and Joseph Bazalgette
- Science and Industry: Louis Pasteur, Robert Koch and Robert Ehrlich
By the end of the course students will be inspired at the remarkable developments from which we have benefited and encouraged to explore some topics in greater detail
