This course is for; those who have only a very rudimentary knowledge of the piano

For the first session students will need;


Pencil & Rubber

Book: The Classic Piano Course Book 1 (or Omnibus edition) by Carol Barratt

Additional Costs;

Other music books as necessary.


For students playing on keyboards, it is advisable to bring headphones with adaptor plugs.

The course will cover

Week1    Notation and the Keyboard. Reading and playing from Treble Clef notation.              

                Melodies in the right hand.

Week2    Reading and playing from Bass Clef notation.

Week3     Reading from both Treble and Bass Clefs. Melodies played by both hands. 

Week4     Rhythm: Notes and rests.

Week5    Rhythm continued: Interpreting Time Signatures    

Week6    Sharps, flats and naturals.

Week7    Hands together interaction: Similar and contrary motions and

               Melody with accompaniment.

Week8    Hands together playing continued.

Week9    New Hand Positions.

Week10   Discussion of further repertoire for individual practice over the break.

 By the end of the course students should be able to to read and interpret notation contained within the stave for both treble and bass clefs, and play a repertoire of pieces hands together.

Alec Robinson

Alec Robinson is a full-time piano tutor, music educator and performing musician. A graduate of both The University of York and Leeds College of Music, he runs a business providing tuition for piano students in the Yorkshire area, and in this capacity mentors individuals across a wide range of musical levels and abilities, from beginners to degree-entry level. He also runs group classes for piano in the Leeds area, and regularly performs as a soloist and in various ensembles in music venues across the UK.
