This course is suitable for anyone who enjoys all things French!

During the course we will look at the art which was produced in France from the times of the First French kings till the early 18th Century. We will also look at  Art as church propaganda, as state support and as a means to bring about Revolutions.

Are paintings only what they appear to be?  Or are there reasons behind their choice of subjects?  Was each new movement a rebellion against what had come before?

Artists such as Quarton , Le Nain, Watteau, Poussin will be assessed in their historical contexts.

You do not need to bring anything to the class except a notebook and a pen.
