This course is for anyone who enjoys the process of writing creatively and has an interest in memoir/diary nonfiction and fiction written in the style of memoir/diary.

For the first session students will need pen and paper, laptop if preferred.

The course aims to help students improve their writing skills by focusing on writing techniques such as journal writing, structure in memoir/diary writing, voice and style - message, finding an overarching theme

The course will cover:
Week 1: Introduction – creative writing and the self

Week 2: Difference between memoir, autobiography, diary, journals…

Week 3: Memoir…What do you want to say? Theme in memoir

Week 4: Memoir…Structure, content…some famous examples

Week 5: Memoir… Finding your voice, style of writing…exploring famous examples

Week 6: Diary writing: techniques in diary writing – some famous examples

Week 7: The Art of writing a blog

Week 8: Diary – Do’s and don’ts in diary writing

Week 9: Memoir and diary – novels that have adopted either framework

Week 10: Showcase week – sharing our writing

By the end of the course students will have developed an understanding of the structure, techniques employed in diary and memoir writing. They will also have produced their own writing within both genres.

Jackie Kirman

Jackie Kirman has had a career in teaching, initially in the primary sector, then latterly in Further and Higher education institutions. She has specialized in Child Development and Early Years studies.

More recently she has completed several writing courses including a Postgraduate Creative Writing course at Masters level at York University in which she gained a first qualification. She is a member of the Alpha writer’s group which includes writers from all over the world. As a group they are dedicated to sharing good practice, producing high quality written work covering many different writing genres. Jackie also has her own website on WordPress ( jlk2016@wordpress.com ) where she posts poetry, short stories etc.

Although she is relatively new to the publishing world, she has had several pieces of poetry and short stories published (on-line – Poetry Republic, Bookers Readers corner, and anthologies – Great British Write Off.) She is currently writing a novel and a screen play.

Jackie believes that anyone can write creatively – and that each individual has their own set of unique experiences which can be used to explore the creative writing process. The course will help provide a framework from which to develop these skills.
