This course is for people who enjoy the creative writing process - from beginners to more experienced writers…a place to share, critique and develop your pieces of writing.
For the first session students will need; pen, paper, folder/binder for notes, and access to Zoom. We will send an invite out to you.
The course aims to cover several key British poets, examine some different writing techniques used in poetry in an enabling environment. Students will be encouraged to practice these techniques with exercises at home. Each week there will be multiple examples of contemporary poetry from poets like Simon Armitage and Linda France
The course will cover:
Week One: Introduction to Poetry
Week Two: Draw on your own real-life experiences
Week Three: Descriptive/sensory language/sharp concrete imagery.
Week Four: Free writing
Week Five: Experiment with a different poetic form.
Week Six: Play with rhyme/meter
Week Seven: Explore poetic devices
Week Eight: Word choice/editing
Week Nine: Structure
Week Ten: Showcase week
By the end of the course students should feel a developing awareness of how to structure a poem, and how to use various poetic devices to make your poetry better.
